The Slow BurnPaper series builds directly on Terry Fugate-Wilcox’s (1944-2024) Slow Burn Paper, a project Fugate-Wilcox created for the January 1974 issue of Arts Magazine in which each copy of the magazine included a special tipped-in insert of an unbleached sheet of paper identified in print as a “sculpture” and issued as an edition of 26,000—the full print run of the magazine. Fugate-Wilcox conceived the sheet to age more rapidly than the surrounding pages, so that the gradual discoloration over time would serve as the artwork’s primary medium. The Slow Burn Paper series extends this concept into discrete multiple-layered colored sheets stacked together and allowing for a slow natural material transformation central to Fugate-Wilcox’s “Actual Art” philosophy.
