While based in Los Angeles from 1997 to 1999, Jonathan Monk created several important works, one of which was None of the Buildings on Sunset Strip. This series pays homage to Edward Ruscha's seminal artist book, Every Building On The Sunset Strip. Unlike Rushca's pristine documentation of just the facades over a two and a half mile section of the strip, however, Monk's series, while maintaining the same formal and stylistic elements, captures exactly what Ruscha left out, the often cluttered spaces between the buildings.
Contemporary British artist Jonathan Monk replays, recasts and re-examines seminal works and ideas of modern, conceptual, and minimalist art often through variously witty, ingenious and irreverent means.
