Description

Günter Brus earned his reputation through his involvement in the 'Wiener Aktionismus'. This movement, which also primarily included  Otto Muehl, Hermann Nitsch and Rudolf Schwarzkögler, centered around an extreme type of performance art which for Brus involved lacerating himself, smearing himself with his own bodily fluids and masturbating. Brus’ performance, Kunst und Revolution, at the University of Vienna in 1968 resulted in a psychiatric evaluation and criminal charges, on which he was sentenced to six months' strict confinement. In 1969, Brus illegally moved to Berlin where he met Gerhard Rühm and Oswald Wiener. Together they established the “Austrian Government in Exile” and its official mouthpiece, the magazine Die Schastrommel.
