During the 1960s and 1970s, Ed Ruscha created a series of 16 small, self-published books that became the catalyst for the way artists could approach the book form. Some Los Angeles Apartments was Ruscha's third book. It featured a photographic survey of the subtle beauty of the post-war Southern California rental property construction boom. This book returned to the more varied page layouts of Twentysix Gasoline Stations, but like the two books before, the most common page spread contained a single photograph on the upper right-hand portion of the page.
"In the 1960s, Ed Ruscha more or less reinvented the artist’s book. By turning away from the craftsmanship and luxury status that typified the livre d’artiste in favor of the artistic idea or concept, expressed simply through photographs and text, Ruscha opened the genre to the possibilities of mass-production and distribution.
