Press Release

“Heather Jones · A Sort of Homecoming”
The Gallery at the Summit  Hotel
5345 Medpace Way, Cincinnati, OH

May 31, 2024 to November 2, 2024

Artist Talk- date and time To Be Announced.

The Gallery at the Summit Hotel is pleased to present the solo exhibition “A Sort of Homecoming” featuring sewn textiles by Dayton, Ohio based artist Heather Jones. Created between 2021 and 2024 and ranging in size from 14 x 11 inches to 9’ square, the show is a vibrant display of 31 monumental pieces, each distinguished by a unique pattern developed through the arrangement and color combinations of repeated geometric shapes. Neither quilt nor painting, Jones' compositions intersect the traditions of women’s patchwork and domesticity with the concepts of fine art and craft. Though non-representational, the placement of colors and shapes along with the textile medium tells a very intentional story. With such titles as A Time For Change and Somehow We Do It All, Jones symbolically expresses a decidedly universal feminist narrative.

In 2019, Jones was selected as an artist-in-residence for Kehinde Wiley’s inaugural class at Black Rock Senegal. Profoundly moved by the experience, Jones’ current body of work investigates the influence of traditional African patchwork on American patchwork from the South, and how these shared traditions connect us with our ancestors.

Heather Jones received her BA in Art History, University of Cincinnati College of Design, Art, Architecture, and Planning in 1999 and she is a candidate for an MA in Art History, University of Cincinnati, College of Design, Art, Architecture, and Planning. In 2015 Jones published the book, Quilt Local: Finding Inspiration in the Everyday. New York: Abrams. The artist exhibits both internationally and nationally, and besides her 2019 Black Rock Senegal residency with Kehinde Wiley, in 2024, she participated in Master Class: The Business of Art Making with Mickalene Thomas and Jasmine Wahi. Jone’s work is included in the public collections of the Columbus Museum of Art, OH, Speed Museum, Louisville, KY, Fidelity Investments Corp. Art Collection, Boston, MA, Mary and Al Shands Collection, Louisville, KY, Sara and Michelle Vance Waddell Collection, Cincinnati, OH, Pizzuti Collection, Columbus, OH, and Black Rock Senegal, Dakar, Senegal among numerous others.

“A Sort of Homecoming” is presented by the Summit Hotel, and curated and organized by Alternate Projects. The opening reception for this exhibition is Friday, May 31, from 5 to 8 pm.
