Mitzka's text from the colophon describes an evening when he and Polke are out drinking and end up at Mitzka's neighbors where they share another bottle of wine with the couple. The neighbor is also an artist and after looking at his etchings, Mitzka and Polke put coal bits all over them. The next morning they apologize for their misbehavior, and go after trying to restore the artwork along with some rulers.
German conceptual artist Sigmar Polke (1941-2010) is recognized for his pioneering approaches to painting and photography in the post-war era. Describing his approach as Capitalist Realism, Polke's ironic perspective on consumerism often found expression in his work through the inclusion of pop culture and advertising iconography.
