Robert Louglin (1949-2011) was a self-trained artist who moved to New York in the 1980s and became immersed in the art, design and gay subculture of that time. Over the years, Loughlin obsessively painted the same iconic image of the face of square-jawed man (his partner) seen in profile with a cigarette dangling from his mouth. He painted this image on a wide array of objects from chairs and tables to LP covers. Those lucky enough to visit the 26th street flea market could purchase pieces directly from Loughlin, who was never interested in selling his work through a traditional gallery venue.
