Jerry Uelsmann (1934-2022) was an American photographer renowned for his innovative work with photomontage and the dream-like surreal imagery created with it. These laborious handmade collages were the result of darkroom effects involving multiple exposures and many enlargers, processes that foreshadowed the use of Adobe Photoshop in the late 20th century. It was Uelsmann’s desire to share with the viewer images from his imagination, and to create “allegorical surrealist imagery of the unfathomable.”
