Ha Schult is a German installation, happening and conceptual artist known primarily for his object and performance art and more specifically for his work with trash. As his main medium, Schult has often been quoted as saying, “We produce trash, are born from trash, and will turn back into trash.” Schult, calls himself a “doer,” in that his interest is centered only on the non-repeatable process of doing, for Schult, art is life. Incorporating the car in many of his performances, Schult sees it both as a mechanism designed to protect as well as one to cause great harm. It can be used as a means to escape the world as well as an instrument to conquer it. It is also associated with Schult’s ongoing theme of trash. Since 2007 Schult has presented an award for the most environmentally conscious global car manufacturer.
“The most important material used by HA Schult for his attacks against an impassive, and waning cultural institution is garbage. Garbage used as a material of refusal and provocation.”_______Armin Zweite, 1974
