This exhibition presents the work of Cincinnati-based artists Denise Burge, John Lanzador and Sherri Lynn Wood. Both Burge and Wood are quilt artists and Lanzador creates acrylic on pine relief sculptures.
Using a variety of materials, Denise Burge creates highly energetic imagistic quilts that are an explosion of color and pattern. These beautiful almost cartoon-looking quilts may seem a bit light hearted. Not at all casual, however, Burge’s love and concern for nature resonates from the imagery itself to such sewn on texts as, Chimney Rock in Bloom and Tug Fork Breakdown. Burge's work has been widely commissioned and collected, and included in two Quilt National exhibitions. She is the recipient of multiple awards and grants, including competitive residencies at the Headlands Center for the Arts, the Fine Art Work Center in Provincetown, and, most recently, the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans.
Titling her series, Home Bodies, Sherri Lynn Wood uses common everyday materials like blanket squares, vintage tablecloths and clothing trim for what at first glance look like quilts with beautiful abstract designs. Closer inspection reveals these shapes and patterns actually symbolize aspects of the female human body. Wood is the recipient of a Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors Grant, two MacDowell Colony Fellowships and artist residencies at the Joan Mitchell Center and the Headlands Center for the Arts.
John Lanzador’s Lady Bowler series is an ongoing series inspired by an actual miniature sculpture of a lady bowler. The image of this bowler appears in every relief, sometimes showing her whole figure, other times not. The pieces in this series are each 5 1/2 x 8 inches. A total of 288 Lady Bowlers have been made to date and 240 are on display in this exhibition. A passionate educator , Lanzador has collaborated with such local arts organizations as ArtWorks of Cincinnati, Maddux Elementary, BLDG and Visionaries + Voices on community projects and the training of youth apprentices.
Denise Burge · John Lanzador · Sherri Lynn Wood runs through March 28, 2020. For more information on this exhibition contact Alternate Projects, info@alternateprojects.net or 859- 653- 8684.
