Nam June Paik (1932–2006) is regarded as the founder of video art. He is also credited with elevating the common television to fine art making it a tactile and multi-sensory medium and object. Paik worked in a variety of mediums and he created drawings both on paper and in his multimedia sculptures and installations. Exemplary, are his modified television sets in which the moving image is combined with loose expressive gestures of abstraction created through brightly colored expressive layers of markers, paints, and other materials added to the screens.
