In 1977 Jenny Holzer created her Truisms, all-text compositions composed of often-contradictory opinions surrounding commonly held truths and cliches. Variously insightful, hostile, and often comic, these words or phrases were intended to arouse multiple responses. Holzer typed her Truisms, had them printed commercially and then pasted them up as posters throughout lower Manhattan. Her goal was to take art out of the institution and have it accessible to everyone. This highly scarce set of posters are out of the first iteration of a series Holzer continues to make today.
